It has been a surreal year!  When the Libertarian Party called me, about this time last year and asked me to run for Congress, it was put up or shut up time.  With the blessing of my better half, we boldly went forward into unchartered territory knowing that our lives would never be the same again.

During this extraordinary year, we have come across so many countless wonderful people, freedom fighters really,  who also seem to have managed to unplug themselves from THE MATRIX, recognizing the ever increasing size & threat that is inherent in government, thus seeking to reduce it. Their sheer existence & fortitude made everything possible, for these were our first supporters.

My debate with Rep. Howard Berman came off without a hitch on the 20th of this month.  To his credit, the Congressman did show up and the debate was lively although one sided, as I soon realized that my Republican competitor had jammed the cafeteria with his supporters.  I guess I was lucky that I was not the source of their ire.

Nevertheless, I held my own, even as I espoused views I knew would be found unfriendly by the neo-conservative crowd, such as my insistence on ending the failed wars on drugs & terror.  I readily admit I was not the most popular candidate at the event, but walk away comfortably knowing that I had won the most converts, or at least, sparked some critical thinking.  The work is only beginning!

Debate Update

My much anticipated debate with Rep. Howard Berman is a mere four days away, and we are in full campaign mode!  Last time, I wrote about this event expressing skepticism at the possiblity of the incumbent's attendence.  I still have my reservations but am doing my best to expect the unexpected.

As some of you may know, I am currently scheduled to debate the incumbent Democrat Howard Berman as well as the Republican candidate on October 20th, 2010 at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks.  The event I am told is being graciously sponsored by the Sherman Oaks Home Owner's Association. I was also informed that Mr. Berman’s campaign requested I be there.  What a guy…

The above quote can be attributed to the French philosopher & politician Joseph Marie de Maistre but I first heard it from my dad many years ago, in reference to Cuba.  In present context, it seems to give support to the argument that you cannot bring democracies to countries that are not ready for it.

The American Immigration Lawyers Association is collecting the stories of young people who would qualify for relief if the DREAM Act were to be enacted into law.  Telling the stories of DREAM Act students will help build support for this bi-partisan bill.

You are cordially invited to spend an intimate evening with our candidate for the 28th Congressional District, Carlos A. Rodriguez on Friday, August 6, 2010 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, while savoring our selection of the finest beers and wines.  This will be your opportunity to speak to a future congressman, and see where he stands on the issues that are most dear to you.  Bring your concerns along with plenty of questions and allow us to stimulate your mind as well as your palate.  Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. Feel free to bring your own favorite beer or bottle of wine!
