Thoughts on my upcoming debate with Howard Berman

By Carlos Rodriguez, on Sep 1, 2010

As some of you may know, I am currently scheduled to debate the incumbent Democrat Howard Berman as well as the Republican candidate on October 20th, 2010 at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks.  The event I am told is being graciously sponsored by the Sherman Oaks Home Owner's Association. I was also informed that Mr. Berman’s campaign requested I be there.  What a guy…

Many people who are following the Rodriguez Goes to Washington Express have expressed their excitement about the three candidates sitting down to discuss the issues.   Nevertheless, I find myself cautiously optimistic for the following reason:  Without having done a scientific poll, it seems to me that many debates never go forward or, at the very least, suffer a fatal blow from a missing key candidate.  In this case, if anyone were to fail to appear, be most assured it will be Howard Berman.  Indeed, the scheduling of this debate already exemplifies his political prowess.  Notice the date, October 20th, a mere two weeks before the election, a time when most voters already have an idea of who they plan to vote for.  If Rep. Berman is well ahead in the polls, what would be the benefit for him of debating me and thereby exposing all that is wrong with our present government?  None and thus, HE WILL NOT SHOW.   And blame the absence on a more pressing government obligation... which too many will be all too happy to believe.

If, however, as expected, we blow the lid off this boiling stew of hypocrisy & corruption and give the good sir a run for his office, then, and only then, will he come to the showdown at the Sherman Oaks Corral.  And probably attempt to paint me as an extremist because I want to cut the size of the government dole.

Nevertheless, in scheduling this debate, Rep. Berman has already done much more than what he ultimately does or fails to do on the evening of October 20th.  He has silenced those, including myself, who suspect that he will be hiding under his desk until after his carefully gerrymandered voters have swept him in to office for a 15th term on November 2.

In plain talk, we can no longer say "Where is Howard?" without a Dem saying "at Notre Dame High School, October 20th, buddy"!  The sad part is, he probably won't show up, and will, in fact, be under his desk until his carefully herded sheeple have voted him in yet again.

Let’s pray that I’m wrong and that we have begun to unplug the matrix in the next 50 days.

In either case, I will be present and ready on Wednesday, October 20th at 6pm at the corner of Woodman & Riverside in good ol' Sherman Oaks.   I hope you will join me.

EVERY COUNTRY GETS THE GOVERNMENT IT DESERVES

By Carlos Rodriguez, on Aug 1, 2010

The above quote can be attributed to the French philosopher & politician Joseph Marie de Maistre but I first heard it from my dad many years ago, in reference to Cuba.  In present context, it seems to give support to the argument that you cannot bring democracies to countries that are not ready for it.

Decades & years of study later, I know that de Maisrtre and my dad were right.  Have you ever tried discussing politics with Cubans?  Good luck.  I have yet to see two Cubans with opposing political views have a discussion that doesn't end in shouting, name calling, threats of violence and censorship.  Is Cuba truly ready for democracy?  Doubtful, but I hope I'm wrong.  After all, I haven't been there in 40 years.

In reference to our own beloved country, the USA, we are inundated on a daily basis with evidence of how incompetent and corrupt our elected officials are, but it seems that the most most of us will do is simply complain about it.  Perhaps to their credit, others do not even bother to voice their disenchantment, rather simply accept their powerless lot in life, and hope that someday someone will save them.  Still others, the most misguided, actually believe the country is heading in the right direction.  These are the people who believe that an ever larger government is a good  thing as it tries to "protect" us from big bad business, refusing to realize that they are one in the same.

But here is the crux of the matter:   Despite their superior numbers and alleged discontent, if I hold a meeting to discuss our enslavement and offer a roadmap to freedom, I'll be lucky to have twenty people show up.  If I hold a meeting, and said Enrique Iglesias was going to be there, I'd have to ask LAPD to provide additional security.  What's wrong with this picture?

Why do congressional approval ratings hover around 20%, yet re-election rates are in the 90th percentile?  What's wrong with this picture?

WHY, DESPITE ALL MY PLEADINGS, WILL THE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS STILL GO IN TO THE VOTING BOOTH THIS NOVEMBER, AND VOTE FOR EITHER A DONKEY OR AN ELEPHANT, ENSURING THAT THINGS ONLY CONTINUE TO GET WORSE?

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!?

NOTHING.

A country gets the government it deserves.

In the end, we will have no one to blame but ourselves...

DREAM Act Advocacy: Submit Your Stories!

By Carlos Rodriguez, on Jul 25, 2010

The American Immigration Lawyers Association is collecting the stories of young people who would qualify for relief if the DREAM Act were to be enacted into law.  Telling the stories of DREAM Act students will help build support for this bi-partisan bill.

The DREAM Act is a bill that would facilitate access to college for immigrant students in the U.S and provide a path to permanent residence for ambitious immigrant youth who were brought to the U.S. as young children and who want to pursue higher education or military service.  You may be eligible for the DREAM Act if:

* They came to the United States as a child (15 or under;
* They are a long-term U.S. resident (five years or more); and
