The above quote can be attributed to the French philosopher & politician Joseph Marie de Maistre but I first heard it from my dad many years ago, in reference to Cuba.  In present context, it seems to give support to the argument that you cannot bring democracies to countries that are not ready for it.
Decades & years of study later, I know that de Maisrtre and my dad were right.  Have you ever tried discussing politics with Cubans?  Good luck.  I have yet to see two Cubans with opposing political views have a discussion that doesn't end in shouting, name calling, threats of violence and censorship.  Is Cuba truly ready for democracy?  Doubtful, but I hope I'm wrong.  After all, I haven't been there in 40 years.

In reference to our own beloved country, the USA, we are inundated on a daily basis with evidence of how incompetent and corrupt our elected officials are, but it seems that the most most of us will do is simply complain about it.  Perhaps to their credit, others do not even bother to voice their disenchantment, rather simply accept their powerless lot in life, and hope that someday someone will save them.  Still others, the most misguided, actually believe the country is heading in the right direction.  These are the people who believe that an ever larger government is a good  thing as it tries to "protect" us from big bad business, refusing to realize that they are one in the same.

But here is the crux of the matter:   Despite their superior numbers and alleged discontent, if I hold a meeting to discuss our enslavement and offer a roadmap to freedom, I'll be lucky to have twenty people show up.  If I hold a meeting, and said Enrique Iglesias was going to be there, I'd have to ask LAPD to provide additional security.  What's wrong with this picture?

Why do congressional approval ratings hover around 20%, yet re-election rates are in the 90th percentile?  What's wrong with this picture?

WHY, DESPITE ALL MY PLEADINGS, WILL THE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS STILL GO IN TO THE VOTING BOOTH THIS NOVEMBER, AND VOTE FOR EITHER A DONKEY OR AN ELEPHANT, ENSURING THAT THINGS ONLY CONTINUE TO GET WORSE?

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!?

NOTHING.

A country gets the government it deserves.

In the end, we will have no one to blame but ourselves...
